Personal Inquiry Question:
How can the teacher-librarian, using evidenced-based practice, empirically demonstrate to parents, teachers and administration the value of collaborative inquiry projects, with a focus on increasing 21st century literacies?
Definitions:
Evidenced-based practice:
Evidence-based school librarianship uses research-derived evidence to shape and direct what we do. EBP combines professional wisdom, reflective experience, and understanding of students’ needs with the judicious use of research-derived evidence to make decisions about how the school library can best meet the instructional goals of the school. Todd, R., 2008
Assessment
“Assessment is the process of collecting, analyzing, and reporting data that informs both student and instructor of the progress and problems that the student encounters throughout a learning experience” (Coates, 2003, p. 157, as cited in Harada, p.1) Citation?
Collaborative planning/teaching
“Collaborative planning brings together teachers and teacher-librarians in order to maximize student learning through sharing skills and knowledge. “
Collaborative Teaching and Multiple Intelligences: a Rational Fit Charlene Leaderhouse
Inquiry-based Learning:
Inquiry-based learning
“… describes a range of philosophical, curricular and pedagogical approaches to teaching. Its core premises include the requirement that learning should be based around student's questions. Pedagogy and curriculum requires students to work together to solve problems rather than receiving direct instructions on what to do from the teacher. The teacher's job in an inquiry learning environment is therefore not to provide knowledge, but instead to help students along the process of discovering knowledge themselves. In this form of instruction, it is proposed that teachers should be viewed as facilitators of learning rather than vessels of knowledge.”

21st century literacies
The “effective use of:
- personal and social skills such as collaboration, communication, leadership and self direction.
- digital age literacy that includes cultural competence, global awareness, accessing information from a variety of texts and effective use of technology and tools.
- learning and thinking skills such as inquiry based learning, critical and creative thinking, problem solving, number sense, higher order thinking, meta-cognition and intellectual engagement.”
